Army Secretary Christine Warmuth on Wednesday directed commanders to initiate "involuntary administrative separation procedures" against unvaccinated soldiers who do not have approved or pending exemption requests.

According to the Army, service members released during these procedures will not receive involuntary separation pay and may be required to repay any incentive bonuses or other special compensation they may have received.
Since the Pentagon made the vaccine mandatory for all service members in August, most active-duty forces have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, about 98 percent, according to Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III.
The army said commanders had relieved six regular army chiefs, including two battalion commanders, and issued 3,073 general officers with written reprimands to soldiers for refusing vaccination orders from January 26.
The Army release order is the latest order by the US military to remove unvaccinated service members during the pandemic. Other branches of the military, such as the US Air Force and the US Navy, have already exempted unvaccinated service members.

The military's effort comes in the same week that President Joe Biden urged Americans to get vaccinated after more than 900,000 people have died from the virus.
"Today marks another tragic turning point for our nation," Biden said in a statement released Friday night. "Every soul is irreplaceable."
He also reminded Americans that the nation now has "more resources than ever to save lives and fight this virus, and vaccines remain our most important tool."
"Vaccines and boosters have proven to be incredibly effective in offering the highest level of protection," the president said. "Two hundred and fifty million Americans stepped up to protect themselves, their families, and their communities by firing at least one shot, and as a result, we saved more than a million American lives."

WASHINGTON - The United States announced today that it will immediately begin removing soldiers who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
According to a directive issued by Secretary Christine Warmuth, commanders must initiate involuntary administrative separation proceedings against any soldier who has refused a COVID-19 vaccination order and does not have an approved or unapproved exemption request. The order applies to rank-and-file soldiers, soldiers with a reserve composition serving on active duty, title 10, and cadets.
"Readiness depends on soldiers who are ready to train, deploy, fight and win our nation's wars," said Secretary of State Christine Warmuth. "Unvaccinated soldiers pose a risk to strength and threaten will. We will initiate involuntary separation procedures for soldiers who refuse the vaccination order and do not wait for a final exemption decision.

Directive 2022-02 clarifies how commanders should proceed with the separation process and requires that these separation actions be processed as quickly as possible. Service members separated due to the refusal of a Covid-19 vaccination order will not be eligible for involuntary separation benefits and may be subject to any unearned special or incentive pay.
As an exception, Soldiers who complete a separation or retirement or begin transitional leave on or before July 1, 2022, will be granted a temporary waiver and allowed to complete their separation or retirement.
The most unfavorable service description that can be issued is general (under honorable conditions), unless an additional offense warrants separation to non-honorable service.
Unvaccinated soldiers who have requested a medical exemption or religious accommodation are temporarily exempt from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement while their requests are processed.

Soldiers who receive denials of medical exemptions or religious accommodation requests will have seven calendar days after the denial to do one of the following or face separation proceedings:
Commanders will ensure that all unvaccinated service members comply with Covid-19 screening and testing requirements and applicable safety standards. Leaders will continue to advise all unvaccinated persons about the health benefits of receiving the Covid-19 vaccine.
