White Sands Military Base - Lockheed Martin's White Sands Missile Range Facility supports missile and launch tests for a variety of missile and firefighting applications.
Located at the US Army's White Sands Range (WSMR) in south-central New Mexico, Lockheed Martin's WSMR facility has supported product testing for the company's Missile and Fire Control (MFC) mission since 1964.

MFC programs supported by the WSMR facility include missiles such as the Tactical Missile System (TACMS), the Single Missile Multiple Launch System (GMLRS), and the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) air defense missile. Medium-Range Air Defense System (MEADS) and Multiple Launch Missile System (MLRS) operators such as the M270A1 and High Mobility Artillery Missile System (HIMARS).
Things To Know About White Sands National Park
About 60 members of the WSMR team conduct flight operations, install missile telemetry and flight termination systems on test articles, and collect test data. The team also supports radar search paths, system-level mobility and environmental testing, and surface testing, including operator maintenance, modification, and repair.
In November 2012, the WSMR facility was one of eleven MFC facilities selected to receive a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for excellence in productivity and quality.

WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (Jan. 17, 2013) - The U.S. dedicated the largest solar photovoltaic system at the White Sands Missile Range on Jan. 16 in a ceremony led by Brig. White Sands Commandant General Gwen Bingham with Kathryn Hammack, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Construction, Energy and Environmental Protection.
"I came here about four months ago and talked about how White Sands is a national treasure and now we can really be proud to be on the edge of the environment," Bingham said. "It takes passion to do something like this. I'm just excited for the journey ahead."
Siemens Government Technologies, Inc., in coordination with the US Engineering and Support Center in Huntsville, NC. The more than four-megawatt White Sands Rocket Range solar system in Boston will generate about 10 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity. annually and provide savings of approximately $930,000.
The solar array at White Sands, complete with a 375kW solar autoport, will provide approximately 10 percent of the energy used during the installation and reduce carbon emissions by 7,400 tons per year. Powered by Solaria's proprietary technology, the 4.1 MW ground control system is also the world's lowest concentration photovoltaic solar power plant.
Amazing Things To Do In White Sands National Park
"This is an exciting project for the United States," said Garrison Commander Col. Leo Pullar. "A sunny place like New Mexico provides an ideal location for solar energy. This project demonstrates our commitment to going green in the United States, working on net zero energy and doing our best to protect the environment."
"We are excited to celebrate the inauguration of this important photovoltaic installation," said Will Irby, Huntsville Center Program Manager. "We are very grateful to the staff at White Sands Missile Range, the Huntsville facility, Siemens, subcontractor Solaria Corporation, and Boston, under the leadership of Brigadier General Gwen Bingham and Col. Leo Pooler. Everyone did a great job making this project possible."
"Siemens is committed to helping the Department of Defense achieve unprecedented levels of energy efficiency, security and independence," said Siemens Government Technologies Inc. Not just financial, but the benefits of maintaining mission readiness and maintaining capabilities for the future. "
"The Department of Defense is using renewable energy and reducing its dependence on fossil fuel resources. Today's energy system demonstrates that the U.S. government's goals of increasing security through energy independence can be economically and practically achieved when the public and private sectors work together." Solaria Corporation said CEO Dan Sugar.

Construction of the solar power plant began in April 2012 and was completed in December 2012. -The ground-mounted single-axis Solaria tracking system follows the sun in the sky and increases energy output by up to 30 percent compared to stationary systems. All energy generated by the project will be used for on-site operations.
"(As a nation) we use more energy and have older infrastructure, and we help alleviate the stress and strain on the power lines, and we do that with utilities. Power lines end here," Hammock said. "There is no better community support than here in White Sands and New Mexico. You have many natural resources that contribute to the future of this state."
A $16.8 million solar PV system by Siemens Industry, Inc. It was a major part of the energy saving contract implemented by the Building Technology Division. Under the terms of the contract, Siemens will maintain and operate the equipment and sell the energy it produces to White. Sands rocket range at the rate they currently pay their local utility company.
It holds renewable energy credits, or RECs, and will use them to meet federal renewable energy mandates.
